Getaway day. On the road. And on the road – again.

Friday, June 26, 2020. Getaway day was uncharacteristically humid and ferociously hot in only the most miserably sticky and sweaty of ways. Last minute deliberations (in my head) over all of the WHAT IF’s that had even the slightest actuality of happening while we were on the road and the [over]packing of the acoutremon that it would take to handle them took up the morning. By the time Dan got home from his half-day at work, I was exhausted and dripping and not at all a happy camper.

The final hold up and just one more fly in the ointment was waiting for re-delivery of a new stove. Earlier in the week a new stove had been delivered. The delivery company crew had broken the new stove while installing the power cord, ignored that fact and plugged it in. Once plugged in, it blew the breaker and proceeded to burn through the socket, etcetera etcetera. But the fact that the light came on was enough for them and they left. Later that day, when Dan investigated he found that not only was the new stove not working but that the electrical situation that had been created would have burned the house down had it been left uncorrected. A few days later, re-delivery was set for the convenience of the delivery company – not us – and happened to fall on Friday (naturally) – and not in the morning but between 1 and 4 p.m. They got there at 3:30 p.m. Grrrrr!

At 5:30 p.m. good-byes had been said and we were on the road. I had already suggested to my Aunt we meet for breakfast the next morning so we were free and clear to get up the hill (about a 2 hour drive) and set up camp for the first night of the journey. Let the Rancho Retro Virgin Voyage – Heartland 2020 trip begin! )Oh yeah! Getaway day was the best idea EVER!!!

At a rest stop about half way to Reno we were fussing with the fridge – which is huge and over packed (wait, what?). At this point Dan realizes he doesn’t have his prescription glasses – the ones he needs to see and do his work. After a frantic search, we realize they must have been left at home.

We call Ben who immediately finds a pair of glasses sitting in the livingroom and after a little encouragement, we convince him bring the glasses and meet us in Auburn, halfway between where we were and home.

At the rendezvous point Ben pulls up and hands me . . . the wrong pair of glasses. Ugh. It was not at all Ben’s fault. We SHOULD have specified exactly which glasses we were looking for, instead, we assumed he knew. So we headed home.

Deja vu all over again. At 8:30 p.m. good byes had been said, again, and we were on the road – again. With stops for some dinner and more gas and yada yada yada we finally pulled into the KOA at Boomtown around 11:30 p.m. The best laid plans and all . . .

Getaway Day Plan B (or maybe C??)
